(Pelorus Sound Loop)
Marlborough’s pretty jewel – peaceful Pelorus Sound…
The Marlborough Sounds region is renowned for its pretty intertwining waterways and pleasant year round climate. And within this beautiful region, peaceful Pelorus Sound is the largest of these delightful waterways. Located at the north eastern corner of New Zealand’s stunning South Island, Pelorus Sound can be reached effortlessly from Picton and Blenheim – with good road connections to the village of Havelock at the head of the Sound.
Marine farming, pine forests, native bush, secluded beaches and private waterfront holiday homes add colour and interest to the local geography. With a comfortable year round climate, a visit is worthwhile in any season. Even winter can be ideal in Pelorus Sound with spectacular, settled weather and frequent mild temperatures.
The network of hiking tracks around Pelorus Sound are basic but well defined. They offer a modest alternative hiking experience to the often busy Queen Charlotte Track and are best suited to people with some previous hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness.
Cruise and Hike activity description
Explore pretty Pelorus Sound with our exciting semi-hosted 3-day ‘Cruise and Hike’ activity that gives you the best of both worlds – land and water! This refreshing idea combines a restful, hosted boat cruise with scenic non-guided hiking tracks. The perfect combination of socialising, serenity, relaxation and healthy exercise!

Your ‘Foxy Lady’ cruise boat hosts will provide dinner and breakfast, plus a packed lunch for your hike (all included in your tour activity price). Your hosts also have a liquor license for supply so a small selection of wine and beer is available for purchase onboard. Or ‘BYO’ (Bring Your Own) if you prefer.

Your Lodge hosts will provide a set menu dinner and a buffet breakfast, plus a packed lunch for your hike (all included in your tour activity price). And a small selection of craft beer, wine and natural fruit drinks are available for purchase at the Lodge. Or just spend two nights aboard Foxy Lady if the lodge is full at the time you want to walk the track. There is no need to carry a heavy pack as all your bedding and main meals are provided! All you need is a light day pack for clothing and personal items required for your hikes.
Please note: The Marlborough Cruise and Hike activity is ‘semi-hosted’ only.
The tracks and hikes in this activity are NOT guided or hosted. Your activity hosts will be there for you at each end of every hike, however all track hikes, walks and tramps in this activity are included on a self-guided basis only.
The boat cruises and accommodation are the only hosted portions of this activity.
Marlborough’s Pelorus Sound area is rightly renowned for bird watching, marine life, sheltered waters and superb scenery – all year round! Your 3-day ‘Cruise and Hike’ experience includes three enjoyable hikes:The walks (Non-guided)
1. The Jacobs Bay Track is a 2 hour hike that follows the coastline through beautiful bush and woodlands.
2. The Putanui Point Track is a 1.5 hour hike (return) that leads over a forest-covered point to a lookout.
3. The highlight of the trip is the Nydia track – a 2-day hike with an overnight stop in the middle (walking 4 to 5 hours each day). The track follows a sheltered shore, crosses two saddles with superb views and meanders through regenerating bush and beautiful rimu, nikau, and beech forest. Classified as a tramping track, Nydia is 27-kilometres long (17 miles) and is best suited to those who are reasonably fit. The trail can be narrow and uneven in some places and tramping/ hiking boots are strongly recommended. Some unbridged streams require care after rain. The track is a great place for bird watchers with kereru in flight and the songs of bellbird and tui in the trees. Weka wander near the forest edge and fantails, robins, and tomtits dart among the manuka trees. Herons track across the shore while shags and gannets hunt for fish close by.
