Explore the remarkable Eastland and Bay of Plenty regions of New Zealand’s North Island – from above! Climb aboard your classic DC-3 airliner for a superb new way to see Rotorua, Taupo, White Island volcano, East Cape, Hawkes Bay, Napier and so much more – in an exhilarating, inspiring and oh-so refreshing new way!

Flying ‘low and slow’ on a yesteryear DC-3 is a fabulous way to see and enjoy far, far more!

There are fun grass runway landings and you can even visit the DC-3 cockpit during flight – yes, just like the good old days! Your air tour is accompanied by an experienced Tour Director and your DC-3 crew includes two professional pilots and a flight attendant (or two). Stay in quality 4-star hotels each evening with breakfast and dinner included each day plus some lunches. Enjoy a grand 2-night stopover in Napier (sea-front) plus fabulous overnight stops in Rotorua and Gisborne.

With only 24 guests per tour, this really is small group touring at its very best…

Thrill to the spectacle of White Island volcano by air. Explore the dramatic Eastland coastline from a low altitude flypast, fly over Hawkes Bay and cruise inland at low level to the central volcanic plateau and lovely Lake Taupo – you’ll certainly see this ever changing landscape as never before!

Meanwhile ground sightseeing has been carefully selected to enrich your appreciation of this remarkable part of the country. Visit enchanting Hobbiton, enjoy Rotorua’s newest eco-attraction, walk with stingrays near Gisborne (if you are keen!), see delightful Eastwoodhill Arboretum, cruise on Lake Taupo, view Napier’s famous Art Deco architecture and drive to the top of iconic Te Mata Peak for stunning views of Hawkes Bay. And of course there will be an opportunity or two for some local wine tasting along the way.

This tour really is in a class of its own so be sure to book soon!

WHY CHOOSE A DC3 FOR THE AIR TOUR?

The DC-3 airliner revolutionised air travel with an innovative design that featured the very best performance elements of the period. It’s enduring character and robust reputation was established in wartime and sealed in faithful airline service that extended into the 1960’s and beyond. Today, the DC-3’s gracious charm, sedate speed and lower altitude cruising make it an ideal choice for scenic flightseeing and comfortable air touring.

YOUR DC3 AIR TOUR AIRCRAFT – ‘ZK-DAK’

Your extensively restored air tour DC-3, meticulously maintained and operated by Fly DC-3 NZ, is one of only a few in the world to hold a full, current ‘Airline Operating Certificate’ (AOC). ‘ZK-DAK’ operates on sightseeing flights, special interest and corporate flights and in regular air show displays. Her distinctive Pratt & Whitney engines always draw admiring eyes skywards.

Built in 1944 as a C-47B by the Douglas Aircraft Company (in Oklahoma City) her initial service was in the continental United States. Conversion to a C-47D in 1946 was followed by service in Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, New Guinea and Australia. In 1987 she was purchased by a group of New Zealand pilots and Warbird members and brought to New Zealand for an extensive rebuild. Inside ZK-DAK today you will find a pleasant, commercially styled cabin with two seats either side of the single aisle. The seats were sourced from a Boeing 767 and include standard airline seat belts. Generous square shaped windows offer pleasant outside viewing and photo opportunities.
