DC-3 Flight – AUCKLAND to NAPIER (Thu)
Step aboard a charming DC-3 airliner this morning to begin your exclusive, yesteryear adventure. Your classic DC-3 is the perfect scene-setter for the fun and festivities to come! Fly from Auckland’s Ardmore Airport mid-morning (10.30 am) and climb gently for a lower level flight southwards across the verdant pastures of the Waikato region. The forests of Tokoroa will appear beneath you too, and lovely Lake Taupo will follow. Track south-east over the Rangitaiki Plains and before long the vineyards of Esk Valley will signal your arrival into Napier and the Hawkes Bay region.
Land in Napier a little before midday and board a waiting coach to transfer into Napier’s Art Deco CBD precinct. Enjoy time for lunch then visit the Antique & Collectables Fair to see an array of original Art Deco accessories and antiques – everything from Art Deco to Victorian and Retro collectables will be for sale.
With festival fever building, the city will be abuzz with plenty of other Art Deco action too. Check into your Ahuriri beachfront luxury hotel later and settle in for a relaxing, fun-filled 3-night stay.
Enjoy a relaxing start to the day then take a short drive to visit Silky Oaks Chocolates. Try some samples, hear how chocolate is made then see 3,000 years of chocolate history on display in the unique onsite museum. Call into Church Road Winery next and taste local wines at one of Napier’s longest established wineries. Stay on for an early lunch then return to Napier.
The rest of today has been set aside for you to enjoy Napier’s Art Deco Festival happenings as you wish. You can expect to see parades, bands, street dancing, music and a variety of Art Deco styled ‘goings-on’ throughout the afternoon and evening.
A dinner opportunity will be co-ordinated into the festival events and your coach is on standby for transfers as required. The Sound Shell is expected to be the place to be this evening!
Today is yours to continue enjoying as much of the Art Deco Festival fun as you wish! Stroll through the inner city and participate, watch or relax as you prefer. The parades, bands, street dancing and music will feature again and there will be showcase events to appreciate too. Expect costume and dance competitions and the big vintage car parade in the middle of the day – with participants all ‘dressed to the nines’ in their Art Deco finery. Vintage aircraft flypasts, traction engines, penny farthing bicycles and all sorts of vintage contraptions are likely part of the activity you will see.
Perhaps you may like to investigate Napier’s boutique shopping opportunities along the way when you have a moment. Dinner will be coordinated into your evening again and the Sound Shell will be the big entertainment focus once more this evening!
DC-3 Flight – ART DECO FESTIVAL then NAPIER to AUCKLAND (Sun)
The Festival activities continue with a soapbox derby, Gatsby picnic, vintage car rides and a whole lot more too! Stay in Napier and make the most of today’s events – or visit the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market in Hastings this morning instead!
There will be time for lunch before you return to Hawkes Bay Airport this afternoon to meet your delightful DC-3 airliner for the return flight to Ardmore Airport.
Take off mid-afternoon (2.45 pm) this afternoon and fly inland above scenic vineyards and farmland then the pine forests of Rangitaiki. Pass over Lake Taupo, turn northwards and fly above mixed forest and farmland to the predominantly dairy country of the Waikato region, then onto Ardmore. Land and disembark around 4.00 pm to conclude your fun Art Deco Festival experience.
Note: The 2020 Napier Art Deco Festival programme will be finalised progressively during the year and some Festival experiences may change accordingly. We will endeavour to update this itinerary as further Festival information becomes available.
