Extensive reconstruction has progressively reinstated the road and rail links and the rail line is anticipated to fully reopen by the time of your tour. If the line does not reopen as expected, road transport will be substituted for this sector. The coastal route is spectacular and exhilarating, whether by road or by rail – photo opportunities abound! At Kaikoura, your train will stop for several hours for one of New Zealand’s most iconic marine life experiences – whale watching! Join a specially designed ‘ Whale Watch’ boat for an opportunity to view Giant Sperm whales and other wildlife off the Kaikoura coast (95% success rate for sightings). Reboard your train later and complete today’s journey to Christchurch where you will arrive early this evening. Enjoy a 2-night stay in the Garden City.

The line from here to Arthur’s Pass is considered the most spectacular part of the route – and a masterpiece of railway engineering. Enjoy views of the dramatic Waimakariri River gorge as your train climbs towards Craigieburn. Pass through 15 short tunnels along the way and cross four remarkable viaducts, including the 72 metre high Staircase Viaduct. Cross the Waimakariri River again for the run through to Arthur’s Pass Station. Descend through the spectacular Cleddau Valley to reach Milford Village and meet your cruise boat. Explore the ice-age grandeur of Milford Sound and Mitre Peak and enjoy lunch as you cruise through the fiord. Expect to see seals and hopefully a variety of other marine life today. This evening, cruise to Walter Peak Station aboard the 1912 vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw.
Learn about high country farm life and enjoy a gourmet barbecue dinner at the Colonel’s Homestead.
Return aboard the Earnslaw and take part in a magical night-time piano sing-a-long!

The natural wonders along the route and the man made engineering marvels will leave you amazed.
