Jb1236 (‘Joanne’).

Your Mainline Steam North Island locomotive was built by the North British Locomotive Works in 1939. She was designed for New Zealand’s track gauge of 1,067 mm (3 feet 6 inches) and delivered in 1940 as a coal burner. Retired in 1971, she went through several ownership changes before Ian Welch purchased her in 1988. Then in 1998 the decision was made to fully restore her. She was completely stripped down, converted to an oil burner and totally rebuilt in every detail.
Locomotive Jb1236 (Joanne) is 20 metres long (67 feet), weighs 108 tonnes and has a driving wheel diameter of 1.37 metres (54 inches). Her wheel arrangement is 4-8-2 and her boiler pressure is 200 pounds. An impressive locomotive for sure!

Ka942 (‘Nigel Bruce’)
Your Mainline Steam South Island locomotive ‘Nigel Bruce’ (Ka942) was built at Hutt Workshops (New Zealand) as a coal burner. Ka942 is a member of the largest locomotive class ever built in New Zealand and entered service in 1940. Converted to an oil burner in 1948, locomotive Ka942 was retired in 1967 with intentions to convert her to a stationary boiler. However Ian Welch purchased her instead, in 1972. Restoration happened slowly over many years before a comprehensive overhaul started in earnest in 2001. Ka942 was eventually returned to service in 2008.
Locomotive Ka942 (Nigel Bruce) is 21 metres long (70 feet), weighs 145 tonnes and has a driving wheel diameter of 1.37 metres (54 inches). Her wheel arrangement is 4-8-2 and her boiler pressure is 200 pounds. A powerful locomotive indeed!

Your Mainline Steam rail tour carriages are comfortable, pleasantly styled and fully air-conditioned. Large panoramic windows offer a grand view of the passing scenery; a great advantage for keen photographers!
Meanwhile seating is arranged in pairs either side of a convenient centre table – ideal for relaxing or socialising as you wish. Lunches and morning and afternoon teas are served at your seat from an onboard galley with snacks and drinks available between times.
If you prefer an outside viewpoint, the open-air observation car could be the place to be. Or visit the rear window lounge car and contemplate the soothing sight of the track disappearing into the distance. The choice is all yours!
